Happy Spring!

In the past couple months I have visited the owl, yes just one, a MILLION times.  I think that I might be out of luck with seeing the babies this year because it seems that they are not living in the nest they usually stay in.  Over the winter the cold had made a bigger hole in the hollow tree and they must have decided it wasn't suitable for their babies and so they laid their eggs elsewhere.  I do believe that they are close by though because every time I stop by the dad is still around.  And by the look of his owl pellets (which is not owl poop just regurgitation of the bones they swallow) he has been eating a lot more than usual, which I assume would be for the babies.  Around this time last year was when I saw the babies for the first time, which is why I am there almost everyday looking for them :) So I am hoping that once they are ready to come out, after all this rain, that they will move back to the area they were in before since there is a lot of space for them to learn to fly and hunt.  Two nights ago, right when it was getting dark, I stopped by as well and was able to see the dad up and active, flying around.  I was able to get a video of him hooting but it is not that great so I will work on getting a better quality one.  Sorry this news isn't too exciting but I thought I would update for anybody that was interested!

Thanks for reading and hopefully I will be able to post in the next few weeks something about the babies!!

I might be obsessed....

So this is not the owl that I usually post but I thought this was blog-worthy. Being the bird freak that I am, I of course spotted out a different Great Horned Owl while home for Spring Break in a nearby conservation area while driving through and taking pictures of the pretty snow.

The owl was kind of far into the brush and since I couldn't walk up closer to the tree and nest this is the best I could get at the time.  You can't see the whole body but you can see the tops of the ears! I'll be going back in a little bit to show my mom and will update this if I can get any better pics.

Here is another little bird I saw on my adventure through the park, an American Kestrel.

Happy New Year!

Even though I haven't been able to post any pictures on here for a while, I have still been visiting the owls every few days in hope that they will soon be laying their eggs in the next few weeks. Every time I visit I make sure to check if either of them are in the nest preparing but I haven't caught them in it yet. Anyways, here are some pictures of the male when I saw him today.

Hopefully in the next few posts there will be an update on whether they are in the nest or not. Stay posted!!
